Check out these resources for loads of information, cool tools, and fun tips to help you make your health a priority.

Physical Activity

  • Physical Activity for Everyone is like one-stop shopping! This site has guidelines for exercise, how to measure the intensity of your physical activity and videos of muscle strengthening exercises to do at home or at the gym.
  • Mayo Clinic Fitness Center offers slide shows, video demonstrations, podcasts and general information on a variety of physical activity topics.
  • Small Step Adult and Teen is hosted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It includes an activity tracker, goal setting guidance and an extensive list of suggestions to increase your daily activity one small step at a time.
  • National Institute of Health (NIH) Senior Health division has an extensive Exercise for Older Adults section. It includes video presentations in addition to print information. This user-friendly site allows you to change text size and use a speech feature to accommodate vision and learning differences. Be sure to check out the Exercise Stories section on the site. You’ll be inspired by the stories of seniors from all over the country who have changed their lives through an active lifestyle.
  • Woman Activity Tracker, a free program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health, helps you stay physically active all year long. Set personal goals, earn virtual awards, and track your success. Interact with a community of women making the commitment to a healthier life! This site encourages women to get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity each week, including muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days of each week. You’ll find a wide array of tools on the Woman Activity Tracker web site that can make it easier and fun to be active. Plus, you can form a team and organize competitions with other teams.

 

Breast Health

  • For the latest information on breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, risk factors and screening, and a host of other topics—like complementary therapies, life after treatment, and quality medical care, visit Susan G. Komen for a Cure.
  • If you meet certain income guidelines and either have no insurance, or insurance that does not pay for screening mammograms, there is help available. For more information, call the Tennessee Breast and Cervical Screening Program at 1-877-96-WOMEN (1-877-969-6636)

Sun Safety

  • The Skin Cancer Foundation has an extensive list of sunscreen products that have been awarded the Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.  To earn the Seal, a manufacturer must prove that its product sufficiently and safely “aids in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin.”  The list doesn’t stop with sunscreens.  It includes cosmetics, skin care, sunglasses, clothing, umbrellas and sunshades and even laundry additives.  Seal of Recommendation List

 

Quit Smoking

  • If you or someone you love wants to quit smoking or using other tobacco products, call the free Tennessee Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). For the hearing-impaired call, 1-877-559-3816.Research shows that smokers who use the free Quit Line are four times more likely to quit than if they try to quit on their own!  When you sign up for the Quit Line you will work with a free trained Quit coach and receive a free Quit kit.

 

Cervical Cancer Prevention and Screening

  • For answers to the most common questions about the HPV vaccine, Pap tests and screening guidelines, visit WomensHealth.gov, the Federal Government Source for Women’s Health Information.
  • If you meet certain income guidelines and either have no insurance, or insurance that does not pay for Pap tests, there is help available for you.  For more information, call the Tennessee Breast and Cervical Screening Program at 1-877-96-WOMEN (1-877-969-6636)
